Yes, me! If someone had told me even a week ago that I’d be able to do this, I would have laughed. In fact, when our Master Instructor picked up a few boards and said, “Brenda, you come up first,” my response (instead of the correct “Yes, SIR!”) was “Uh-oh.” He raised an eyebrow and said, “Yes, SIR!” which I promptly echoed, scrambling to my feet. I’d been practicing my skipping side kick, since it will be on my yellow belt test in a few weeks, and that’s what I used to break the board. Hey, I think it’s fairly impressive that I can even kick that high (above waist-level) at my age, much less break a board while doing so! So I had to come here and crow about it.

I broke my first board!

Hi Brenda,
I love to read about people who do not let grass grown under their feet. Like you, I try new things all the time.
I broke my first board nearly 20 years ago when I was 50. That was in a Tony Robinson seminar. Since then, I have taught some (Elementary) students how to break through whatever is holding them back by teaching them to break a board. A powerful lesson.
I enjoy your website and look forward to sharing one of my own once I am published in America.
Thanks for sharing yours.

Thanks so much for posting, Margo! I meant to blog about getting my yellow belt, but never did. (As you can see, I’m not a very conscientious blogger!) Now I’ll be testing again in less than a month!
I really do feel strongly that we only get old when we start thinking we’re old–and I never plan to let that happen! Sure, I have to wear a knee brace, but I’m still going to taekwondo class two or three times a week and learning something new every single time.
And in a little more than a month, I’ll finally get to go diving again! I can hardly wait!

Brenda,
WTG and kudos to you. Hubby has black belts in two martial arts, and we are both starting another one (will be my first). I am not in the best of shape, but I have to say every little accomplishment I do is a great feeling. It’s nice to know that no matter our size or age, we can always improve ourselves, isn’t it? And have fun doing it, too. Good luck, and keep us informed on your progress!!!!

Thanks, Tina, and good for you, too! Yes, it really is empowering to learn a new skill like this. I hope you’ll report back on your progress, as well! Both of my girls have done some martial arts–Bethany is a brown belt in hapkido–but this is my first time ever attempting such a thing. I must say, I’m still enjoying the heck out of it!
